Pools could be so much more appealing

Being a mature swimmer I can remember the days when in order to swim in the UK, you had to go to a local ‘baths’ rather than a leisure centre. Individual changing cubicles would often be on poolside and quite often you would be required to walk through about 6 inches of coloured water containing disinfectant to ensure your feet were clean. Fast forward to today and whilst some pools request swimmers to shower before entering the pool, it is not always mandatory.

Swimming on the continent is a different story, all swimmers are required to shower before entering the water, pool shoes must be worn at all times in both the changing rooms and poolside and when in the water the swimmer MUST wear swimming cap.

Showering before entering the water – makes sense, humans perspire at all times, especially in the Summer and there is the lotions and sprays that are applied to the body, not to mention make-up. A quick shower is not enough to rid the body of all this, but it helps, the rest sadly is washed away by the pool water and filtered away by the back washing system.

Pool shoes not only help limit the spread of foot diseases like athlete’s foot and verrucas but also keeps your feet off the wet floor which as the damp surfaces harbour residue from chemicals and cleaning products.

There is not a lot worse than happily swimming along when a clump of hair wraps itself either round your fingers or worse still your goggles. It is repulsive to me personally and ruins my swim session every time. We all shed hair all the time and those with long hair tend to lose more hair than most. On the continent where swimming caps are mandatory this doesn’t happen, hair is tucked into the swimming cap and therefore unable to break away.

Swimming caps, pool shoes and showers, just three small things that could be implemented to improve the quality of water and improve the experience of swimming in the UK.

Competitive swimmers often wear two swimcaps

Cherished items can come in many shapes and sizes, they can be a piece of jewellery , a photograph, an heirloom or a ticket to an event you once attended, it can be anything at all but it means the world to the owner and they normally take extra measures to look after that particular item.

As a swimmer your most treasured possessions are your swimsuit, your swimming cap and your swimming goggles. There is no tougher sport than swimming and it requires the utmost dedication, 100% of the time. When you are required to swim train 8,9,10 times per week, your absolute essential items are cap, goggles and cossie (swim costume or trunks).

Early on in a swimmer’s career, training gear can be used for competition but as they become more dedicated and climb the ranks of ‘swimmer’, the training gear is used solely for training and never worn on race day. The swim cap and goggles used for training must be comfortable enough to wear for up to 3 hours at a time without giving a headache and within that session stay in position for anything up to an hour and a half to withstand the toughest training sets.

Swimming caps keep hair from falling in the eyes and they also provide the swimmer with a more streamlined profile. Caps are easy to put on and take off and they also help to protect the hair from chlorine damage.

Outdoor and extreme swimmers often wear caps to provide them with a cover to help limit heat leaving the body which is crucial when swimming in cold temperatures, in some cases the wearer will wear two caps to double the effect.

High performance competing swimmers generally wear two swim caps when racing and between the caps they put on their goggles. Doing this ensures the goggle elastic does not cause any friction in the water nor roll down the head, which can pull the goggles away from the face causing leaks and thus making it difficult to see.

Swimming caps are an essential part of a swimmers kit and can be printed with individual names, club badges, school crests or slogans.

Whatever your passion for fitness or sport you will normally find that at Christmas time there is a fun element to the sport including races or final training sessions. Take running groups, many seen donning a Father Christmas hat, tinsel earrings or anything glittery and they are set to go. Fun runs around Christmas can be large organized events where each participant receives a Christmas pudding or it can be the local running groups who just enjoy the lighter side of running and a pre prep for the festivities.

If Swimming is your passion the Christmas emersion into water normally involves one of the outdoor variety, an icy dip in the sea for those in coastal towns or maybe a chosen lake or river. These are undertaken without wetsuits and wearing nothing more than a normal swimsuit, a silicone swim cap (for warmth if nothing else) and a smile.

Overseas is no different with swimming enthusiasts taking to the icy waters in the name of festive fun. I myself have had the great fortune to have been able to join in with the Christmas tradition of Club Natacio Sitges which entailed dashing across the marina in Sitges, Spain for the four years plus that I lived there. On one selected day between Xmas and New Year on a cold and normally crispy morning we would gather at the quay side and wait patiently for the swimmers to assemble and the safety talk to begin.

Firstly, the kids race, this was only about 50m for any child under the age of 10, my two boys were members of the swim club and because I was swimming in the adult’s event, they wanted to swim in the kiddies event. Swimsuit, silicone swimming caps and goggles on and off they went to the pontoon. Once the whistle blew they all dived in and whilst some stopped to get their breath back, others splashed their way down the course and scrambled up the ramp to awaiting dry, fluffy towels and a mug of hot chocolate provided by the club.

Then it was the adults turn and there were far more nerves and trepidation than there was from the kids. We lined up along one of the wooden pontoons which was approximately 600m from the ramp. When the whistle sounded half the swimmers dived in with the same reaction as the children, screams of shock and excited chatter followed by the familiar splashes of front crawl arms. I was always one of the last to dive in, the sheer terror I anticipated was met with reality when I took the plunge and hit the water. Despite the silicone swim cap, it was like a turbo charged head freeze from eating ice cream too quickly and as I surfaced from the dive I went into an efficient front crawl as I could when your shoulders don’t work properly and you need to breathe every stroke. By the time I reached the ramp to climb out my body was warm and tingly and for those few moments I felt I could have happily swam on, such is the miracle of adrenalin but my husband and children waited with a towel and the pull of that too great.

Following a steaming cup of hot chocolate the commemorative medals were handed out for completing the task and the participants then headed for their cars and the warm showers that home provided. Challenge over until the Summer where the long sea swim awaits.

Open Water Swimming Is IT!

Unless you are one of the very few lucky swimmers who own their own swimming pool, you will have been climbing the walls with the inability to get you regular fix of chlorinated water.

Whether you are a competitive swimmer missing the endless miles, lap swim for fitness, or you use the pool for a gentle paddle whilst chatting to your friends, the feeling of NOT being able to do it has been nothing short of torturous.

Open air pools and Lidos are a great destination for your swimming fix but they are far and few between and with the typical British weather, not everyone is happy to take the plunge and whilst occasionally the sun does shine, it’s not always possible to get lane lines in when the world and his wife turn up with the kids for a splash about.

What is available up and down the country for the more dedicated swimmer is open water swimming at various lakes and quarries, some privately owned and some council owned.

Swimming in the great outdoors can be a tad scary at first, the dark, cold water and the not knowing what is beneath you really tests your mettle but remember, you can always wear a wetsuit and of course you have to wear a cap.

The silicone cap not only helps protect your hair, it keeps it from knotting and, if the hair is long, it keeps it out of your face. So much heat is lost through the head so the importance of wearing a silicone cap is all the more important as a way to help eliminate brain freeze and keep the heat within the swimmer.

Bright coloured caps are the best way to ensure the swimmer is fully visible, not only to the other swimmers, but to the many other water users and of course the life guards. Red, Orange, Yellow and Neon Green are the safest caps to wear as the blues, black and white caps can merge easily with the reflection on the water and make it quite difficult to spot. Safety must come first so swimming in a silicone becomes almost a life saver.

DIVE RIGHT IN, THE WATER IS LOVELY

After many months without the smell of chlorine on my skin and in my hair we get the news that we have been waiting for – training is back on starting tonight, what a joy!

I go to my wardrobe where my kit bag and sports gear have been laid untouched since the last time I swam with my swimming club which was sometime in back in February. I have used a swimsuit, swim cap and goggles in the interim, once during a long weekend in Lanzarote where I managed 2 quick swims in the fabulous open air 50m pool in La Santa and again for a sea swim in Cornwall where I decided to join my son, sister and niece in a ‘gentle’ paddle across the sea front from Newlyn to Penzance.

In Lanzarote the beautiful bright yellow sunshine beat down onto the 50m pool, the crystal-clear deep water inviting me to take the plunge, an invite that simply could not be denied. Swimsuit – check, silicone swimcap – check and goggles – check and then…... that heavenly feeling of diving in for the first time when the water devours you and you drift in your own silence, revelling in the sanctitude and blissful silence before eventually surfacing and taking the first stroke, it’s a heavenly feeling but one I would imagine only felt by those at home in the water. 3k complete and a reluctance to leave the pool

Fast forward four months to Cornwall where Penzance provided a difference challenge altogether. There were stormy skies, a racing incoming tide, murky, seaweed filled saltwater and submerged rock formations to contend with but it was a challenge we were equal to so we chose our half hour of optimum water depth and headed for the white lido walls. I was the only one without a wetsuit so whilst my swimming was less restricted, the cold was more evident and I was happy I’d had the presence of mind to put in a silicone swimming cap which provided not only a barrier against the cold but also kept my hair from knotting up and out of my eyes. The visibility on that swim was non-existent, not only because of the wave turbulence and the long strands of seaweed forever attacking our faces, necks and arms but also because the goggles were old and the anti-fog lenses clearly past their sell by date.

And so to my first training session since Covid 19 stopped sport in its tracks. We’re told we must turn up in our swimsuits so rather than put normal clothes over the top I grab my swim parka and take my clothes for afterwards. This familiar 25m pool is geared up for the return, they have the fire exit door open on poolside and we must enter and then sign the book just in case there is a need for track and trace. I put my poolside shoes on and grab my cap and goggles and make my way to the end of the pool, I pull on my silicone cap, twist the hair left outside my cap and proceed to push it up into the back of my cap, my goggles are next and I realise they are the same ones I swam last time in the sea with – I must get some new ones. The session is written on the white board and we commence the session. Ouch! Everything aches, I’m missing the wall on tumble turns and my arms and legs are in bits, not to mention being out of breath at the four length mark – what is that all about! The main thing is we are back, swimming and smelling of chlorine.
